An invasive alien species (IVAS) is an introduced species that harms its new environment. Invasive alien species adversely affect habitats and bioregions, causing ecological, environmental, and/or economic damage. The term can also be used for native species that become harmful to their native environment after human alterations to its food web. Since the 20th century, IVAS have become serious economic, social, and environmental threats worldwide. Mahasarakham University understood the need to prevent uncertainty in comprehending and identifying invasive alien species and recognized the need for criteria to be created for declaring a species as an IVAS. Thus, the policy focus on the identification and reduction of the impact of IVAS on campus the policy pertains to everyone associated with the University community
Compliance policy:
1. An inventory and Identify the Invasive Alien Species (IVAS) found on Mahasarakham University and the listing of the IVAS is to be updated yearly
2. Provide support for research studies on IVAS. (Factors in the spread, Risk assessment, Utilization and impacts on biodiversity)
3. Control and elimination activities and dissemination to create awareness and provide knowledge on the subject of Invasive Alien Species
Mahasarakham University and WRBRI to survey and control the invasive species in the Kut Deang wetland area at Koeng research station, Mahasarakham province. Also WRBRI have created a plan with the local community to eliminate at least 3 alien species of flora under IUCN (Pontederia crassipes Mart. Solms, Typha latifolia L., and Pomacea canaliculata Lamarck) in 2024
